Agricultural technology and precision farming have been publicised for their potential to better manage inputs, produce greater yields, provide more resilience, while also causing less disruption to the landscape. With an increasing world population, growing urbanisation, the need to lower carbon emissions and regenerate landscapes, the promise of smart farming is substantial. What technologies are available, how widely are they being used and what are the barriers to entry? Are we really entering the golden era of crop science? We discuss how significant the use of new technology will be in improving farming practices.
