In Europe, around 80% of the homes people will inhabit in 2050 have already been built*, and over 40% of non-residential buildings existing today were built before 1970**. While some existing building stock has undergone renovation to meet climate change targets, much more needs to be done. Globally, building operation is estimated to account for 28% of energy-related CO2 emissions and 30% of energy use***. What are the challenges in retrofitting existing stock, how can these be overcome, and how best can reducing emissions and energy use be accomplished? We discuss the scale of retrofitting needed to achieve net zero and the strategies being taken to get there.
