Overview

The accelerated use of BIM and digital technologies has transformed the way the built environment is delivered and consequently, transformed the managerial competencies that the sector requires. The project manager has a critical role when advising clients and stakeholders about the benefits of BIM – how, when and where BIM can contribute to the project outcomes and then demonstrate the knowledge and competence to manage the construction or infrastructure project smoothly. The BIM manager is required to understand the information requirements across the project lifecycle, develop information management process and ultimately to create a project environment in which BIM can work most effectively in a collaborative environment.

The redesigned course now provides a comprehensive guide to applying BIM principles, processes and methodologies consistent with the international standards of ISO 19650. From a global perspective, you will see how BIM technology has been implemented in real scenarios and how BIM process has been transitioned in alignment and integration to the suite of ISO19650 standards. The course will cover the entire BIM project lifecycle and provide a global opportunity to enable construction professionals and owners alike to consolidate their approach towards BIM Delivery.

Learning Outcomes

  • Determine the business case for BIM on any project, taking into account benefits, examining the drivers, functionality and characteristics of a good BIM model
  • Interpret key changes in the transition to ISO 19650 and how these changes impact on existing activities and processes
  • Create an Exchange Information Requirement (EIR) and BIM Execution Plan (BEP) including the process, content, production and evaluation
  • Justify a collaborative approach to the information production, delivery and exchange across an asset’s lifespan
  • Identify who and how to engage with the right stakeholders at each stage of the project lifecycle and develop standards and protocols at organizational and project level for control, feedback and analysis
  • Demonstrate the interaction of information, process, technology and people in a BIM environment
  • Describe the tools and techniques that support enhanced collaboration among the project stakeholders
  • Recognise contractual requirements and commercial data of BIM models, and define the inputs and outputs to be expected at each stage of the project lifecycle
  • Identify the relevant technology that supports BIM in one or more of the following: geo-spatial, design, cost, time and facilities management environments (CDE, etc.)
  • Recognise how BIM requirements can be implemented within the project legal, procurement and tendering framework and to review global examples in practice

  • Comprehend how BIM can contribute to energy efficiency, carbon assessment, sustainable environment and manage the processes required to optimise these outcomes

Meet the trainers

Laura McCrossan

Laura is a BIM specialist with 15 years experience in the construction industry, with involvement in a wide range of multi-disciplinary construction projects across the UK and spanning a variety of sectors, including Healthcare, Education and Heritage.

She started her career in Architectural Technology, where she became a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) in 2015. Since then, Laura’s experience has been focused on BIM, Information Management and Digital Construction.

Laura has a robust knowledge of BIM and experience in the creation, implementation and management of digital strategies to support a clients’ BIM goals and asset management objectives.

She also has experience working as part of both a Design Team and Contractor, so has a solid understanding of the benefits and challenges faced by each party on a project in the implementation of BIM.

Niall Murphy

Niall is a strong proponent of digitally enabled design, construct and operation strategies having worked across an extensive range of the UK’s most innovative projects. Throughout his career Niall has successfully applied his knowledge of information management and BIM technologies to help clients define, communicate, and deliver against the digital and information needs of their projects. In particular, he is skilled at developing strategies to overcome the challenges faced when the client or delivery team are encountering BIM and information management processes for the first time. Niall learnt firsthand the challenges teams face when implementing BIM and the information management process, having guided an architecture studio through the BRE certification for BIM Level 2. Previously, Niall has guest lectured at Queen’s University Belfast, helping to deliver elements of the MSc BIM Project Management course.

  • ISO19650 series have a global reach, thus if you find yourself working on BIM projects across the world the common understanding needs to be established to nourish the best of information management using BIM.

    Conception of the ISO 19650 series was intended to unify the global approach to information management in design, construction, and operation. This requires us all and taking the first steps to understand the common process is critical, don’t be left behind.

  • While the course concentrates on the ISO19650-2 implementation we present the whole suite of ISO19650 standards and how they are applied on a project per project basis.

    Throughout the course we’ve added references to external guidance and resources that help students build context to the course content. We wanted to empower students with tools to actively deploy their knowledge and build the case for information management.

  • Thinking that a three-dimensional model is the outcome of the BIM process is a flawed idea. This course will highlight the importance of information requirements that span across documentation, graphical and alphanumerical information.

    Learn to understand the difference between BIM and the information management process, the terms are not interchangeable.

  • While the course is extensive, we encourage students to read upon additional materials found on the UK BIM Framework website along with the Digital Built Britain case studies.

    Understand the fundamental. Our second module gives a high level understanding of the content, understand it and the rest will be much easier.
