New agreement to boost sustainable construction management in Singapore

A new agreement between the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Trade and Industry Association (Singapore) (TIAS) will boost efforts to work more sustainably and drive carbon emissions down across the island.

The memorandum of understanding signed in May will see both organisations work together to boost awareness around the need for businesses to act more sustainably, and will also see TIAS adopt two RICS-led global standards that offer practical ways to achieve this.

Known as the International Property Measurement Standard (IPMS) and the International Cost Measurement Standard (ICMS3), these world-first standards provide a toolkit for professionals to measure buildings consistently as well as report on carbon, both of which can positively influence design and construction decisions as part of a project.

Working together, both organisations will engage their professional members in this crucial area, particularly as countries like Singapore and others around the world make efforts to put sustainability at the top of their agenda.

With the built environment* accounting for around 40% of global carbon emissions, it is professionals working in the built environment who are best placed to make this ambition a reality.

Kenneth Pan, Vice-President of Engagement at the TIAS said:

“We welcome this important milestone between TIAS and RICS which formalise our commitment towards driving the carbon emission down for the national.”

“The MoU enable our members to tap onto RICS’ global standards and we look forward activtly in communicating with the business community on the use of ICMS3 and IPMS.”

Amara Buyse, Head of Public Affairs for RICS in APAC, added:

“The signing of this agreement is a significant step towards not only raising awareness but also providing the tools for the business community operating in the built and natural environments to embed sustainable practices into their projects.

“We are delighted to have found a partner in TIAS and look forward to working closely with them to raise professionalism and confidence in our markets.”
