RICS Matrics Young Surveyor Awards 2021: Meet the judges

This year’s jury panel consists of 10 industry leaders who will be reviewing the nominations for the RICS Matrics Young Surveyor Awards 2021. Having worked with industry-leading firms and leading projects, each of the judges brings substantial local and international experience from their industry sector to the Awards.

Hear what RICS Governing Council Member for UK and Ireland, Marion Ellis FRICS, has to say about this year’s shortlisted finalists.


  • Dayle Bayliss FRICS – Project Management

    Dayle is a successful businesswoman as Director of Dayle Bayliss LLP, a company who work with clients to help realise aspirations on construction projects. The company covers all areas of construction management from consultancy, building surveying and project management. Dayle is also a member of the LEPs Skills Advisory Panel and trustee of the RICS Benevolent fund, Lionheart.

    "Matrics is a core pillar of the RICS and the awards are the showcase of some of the amazing and talented surveyors that are the future of the Built Environment. As someone who has previously been highly commended at the awards, I know the value that the recognition of these awards gives to all those taking part and what a celebration the final event is. To be a judge and to see how bright the future of our profession is and honour and I’m excited to be involved."

  • Chris Berriman FRICS – Residential Category

    Chris is a Residential Property auctioneer with over 30 years' experience - albeit, as a result of auctions being online for the time being, without a rostrum at the moment!  He is a Managing Partner at Allsop and a member of the RICS Auction Steering Group. His main interests outside work include Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coombe Hill Golf Club, Paul Weller and Dexy – his Wheaten Terrier!

    I am delighted to have been asked to judge this year’s awards. Having done so in the past, I am fully aware of both the hard work that is involved in submitting entries and the level of talent and passion for the profession that each entrant shows. I am sure that this year will be no different.” 

  • Katherine Bowen MRICS – Valuation

    Katherine has over 25 years of valuation experience across a variety of sectors. Since joining Allsop in 1999, Katherine has specialised in commercial valuations and has valued a wide range of commercial, mixed use and value add properties for loan security purposes, pension funds, company accounts and acquisition purposes, throughout the UK. Katherine specialises in large mixed-use value add properties and portfolios. Katherine sits on Allsop’s Operations Board and for the last 10 years has co-ordinated Allsop’s graduate recruitment and the structured training programme for both graduates and apprentices once they commence their APC.

    "I am delighted to be involved in the RICS Young Surveyors Awards 2021 which recognises and celebrates the exceptional young talent we have coming into our profession. They are the future of our industry and I will be looking for those who are excellent role models who demonstrate a depth of commerciality and professionalism with their clients."

  • Peter Moore MRICS – Mentor of the Year

    Peter is a qualified chartered surveyor and CEO of MacDonald and Company. He has worked in the Real Estate Human Capital & Talent Sector for over twenty years; specialising in advising clients upon topics such as staff retention, talent selection, mergers and acquisition, human resource policy and remuneration benchmarking. He is also trustee of ELIFAR Foundation and loves to rally vintage cars in his spare time.

    "I am delighted to be a judge of the Young Surveyor of the Year award Mentor category. The guidance and support of the up-and-coming professionals in our sector is paramount to the sustained long term importance to the profession. Over the years the generosity and support of all mentors who have entered have never failed to impress me."

  • Rory Murphy FRICS – Assets and FM

    An experienced Commercial Director with a demonstrated history of working across the construction and facilities management sector. Rory is a member of the RICS World Regional Board for the UK & Ireland and is also the chair of the FM Professional Group Board within the RICS.

    A judge on the Young Surveyor Awards for the last 3 years Rory suggests that: “The best nominations for me are those that show real personal commitment, a deep understanding of satisfying your stakeholders all underpinned with a passion for the profession."

  • Yulia Pak MRICS – Commercial Property

    A driven and experienced real estate and urban regeneration professional with a strong background in strategy, city economics and research. Yulia has worked in a variety of consulting roles with JLL and CBRE in the UK, Europe and Singapore, helping public and private sector clients design, deliver and evaluate real estate, infrastructure and change programs and projects. She is very passionate about placemaking and has published a number of articles on innovative urban growth strategies, public realm and cross-sector partnerships in urban regeneration. Yulia is a Steering Group member for Placemaking Collective UK. 

    "Both our built environment and the surveying profession are transforming rapidly in response to the many changes in how we interact with our cities, buildings, and places. It is a thrilling time to be a young leader, embracing the change and inspiring others. I am very excited for the next generation of young surveyors who have a real opportunity to make a lasting positive impact for better and more sustainable places and spaces."

  • Gerard Smith MRICS – Land (Rural and Urban)

    Gerard is agricultural partner of Lacy Scott & Knight, a traditional multi-disciplined firm of Chartered Surveyors, established over a 150 years ago.   He was Chairman of the RICS Rural Board and sits on the Land and Resources Global Board.

    He became a Trustee of the South Suffolk Agricultural Association (South Suffolk Agricultural Show) in 2010. In 2020 he was appointed Chairman of the board of Trustees of the Zoological Society of East Anglia (Banham Zoo and Africa Alive) on which he had served as trustee since 2014.

    Gerard lives on the Suffolk/Norfolk borders with his wife and Smooth Fox Terriers, Taffy and puppy, Purdey. His hobbies include alpine and ice climbing, saltwater fly fishing, photography, and music.

  • Justin Sullivan FRICS – QS and Construction

    Justin is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry and founded Adair in 1994. He is Chair of the Construction Industry Council and Chair of the International Construction Measurement Standards Coalition. Justin specialises in contract management, project management, quantity surveying and project monitoring for residential projects in London and the UK as well as internationally.

    “I am excited to be taking part in the prestigious Young Surveyors Awards 2021 which recognise and celebrate the most inspirational young surveying professionals in the UK. I will be looking for outstanding role models who work to the highest standards of professionalism and act as advocates for the profession.”

  • Anthony Walker FRICS – Building Surveying

    Anthony has more than 35 years’ industry experience as a surveyor and project manager, having held senior positions within the public and private sector, and as a senior civil servant with the Department for Education where he led the Property Data Survey Programme, the largest single building surveying programme carried out in Europe. In addition, he served as a commissioned officer in the Royal Engineers, British Army and worked on property projects across Europe, south east Asia and the South Atlantic. Currently a Director at Sircle and a member of the RICS UK & Ireland Regional Board. Anthony is a Global Ambassador with Lionheart.

    "The RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards is one of the key events in the RICS calendar and celebrates the immensely talented young surveying professionals in the UK. I am delighted to be involved as a judge and look forward to reading the Building Surveying entries that demonstrate outstanding achievement in the roles they carry out, with a focus on key areas such as client satisfaction, acting as a team Player, innovation - Thought Leadership and how they act as an Ambassador to the Profession."

  • Christopher Welch FRICS – Apprentice of the Year

    Chris has 40 years’ experience in the surveying profession and is a main board partner of Gardiner & Theobald LLP. He Chairs the Chartered Surveying Trailblazer Apprenticeship Group.

    "I am delighted once again to be involved in the judging of the Apprentice and Young Surveyor of the Year Awards.  Developing, recognising, and rewarding all those that excel, in this wonderful profession of ours is key to ensuring the highest calibre individuals are attracted to and are retained in our profession which will keep Chartered Surveyors at the forefront of the built environment professions.
