James Roger Knowles
(1937 – 2022)
In 1973, Roger Knowles was a Fellow of the RICS, a Fellow of the CIArb and a Barrister and, having worked for a QS firm for a number of years, decided to set up his own business as a one stop shop for construction dispute resolution. It was the first company of its kind, with no need to employ a firm of solicitors to resolve construction disputes.
Additionally, he devised construction professional training seminars on contracts & dispute resolution, which even lawyers began to attend. He spread the company name, and so began a dynasty of offices across the UK and overseas which eventually totalled 26, employing over 400 people.
Roger was also not afraid to move the company away from its core business, setting up subsidiaries including Knowles Loss Adjusters, Staff Placements and a professional body, Quantity Surveyors International. The publication of the Latham Report in 1996 prompted the formation of Knowles Management Services and the Academy of Construction Adjudicators.
In 1998 the company was listed on the AIM market providing funds for further expansion. However, in 2006 Roger decided to sell the company to Hill International and it is now owned by HKA.
Roger leaves behind a huge legacy. He was an astute businessman and a trail blazing entrepreneur who completely reshaped the construction disputes industry.

Sarah Sayce was born in Evesham in 1950.
She graduated in 1972 from the College of Estate Management as a prize winner with a 2:1 degree in Estate Management, becoming MRICS two years later. Known as Sally to friends and family, Sarah married David in 1975 after they met at university, and they went on to have a son and a daughter.
Beginning her career in valuation, Sarah moved into academia following the birth of her children, first as a postal tutor for CEM, then a lecturer in advanced valuation at Kingston Polytechnic. Moving through various posts, in 1989 she became head of the School of Surveying and Planning at Kingston University.
Sarah gained her doctorate from Reading University in 1999, and three years later was awarded the status of Professor at Kingston University, leaving with the status of Emeritus Professor in 2013. She continued to work in part-time roles as a visiting Professor at the University of Reading, Henley Business School and The Royal Agricultural University.
Awarded the status of FRICS, Sarah undertook numerous roles associated with RICS including as an APC assessor, governing council member, arts and antiques and valuation board member, and trustee of the RICS Research Trust.
In addition, she played an important part in national and European sustainability initiatives such as MEES and ReValue.
Sarah was a music enthusiast, playing the flute and joining several choirs, as well as enjoying bellringing with her husband.
Her commitment to ethical real estate, sustainability and the RICS’ public interest role will be remembered with gratitude by all those who worked with her.

As Profession Support and Assurance (Surveyors) Manager, Peter Dixon FRICS was a valued expert member of RICS' surveying and regulation leadership team. He joined the organisation more than ten years ago, following a distinguished professional career. Not only did he play a leading role in RICS' assurance work through the valuer registration scheme, he directly engaged with members about our profession support and assurance valuer registration revised strategy with huge energy.
On leaving school in 1974, Peter went to work for Maynard & Co. in Derby. During this time, he studied urban estate surveying at what was then Nottingham Polytechnic, and after graduation went to work for estate agents Allen & Farquhar, also in Derby. He became chartered in 1988 and took a job with GVA Grimley in Birmingham in 1987.
In 1992, Peter took a career break to work for Birmingham-based Christian charity Cornerstone, which ran outreach projects in the east of the city. Peter's faith was important to him: he was later a lay reader in the Church of England, and most recently ministered to rural parishes in the Lichfield Diocese.
Resuming his surveying career in 1996, he set up Peter Dixon & Co. from his garden shed and relocated his family to rural Derbyshire in 1999, whilst much of his work remained in the West Midlands. He sold the business and went to join Chivers as a director in 2004. Peter then moved to Aztec Commercial as a valuer in 2007, before becoming a sole practitioner the following year. When he joined RICS in 2011, he felt he'd found his niche after many years in the profession.
Director of regulation Chris Alder remembers Peter as a passionate RICS member who kept the regulation team laughing and positive. 'Throughout remote working, he stood out in meetings by continuing to wear formal attire,' Chris says. 'Peter's loss leaves a huge hole in our team – not just in operations, but also in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.'
Peter's daughter Grace says: 'He encouraged me into the profession and taught me invaluable lessons in integrity and leadership – as well as sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of professional standards! I would not have achieved what I have in my career without his guidance and support, which I know he gave to colleagues and trainees over the years too.'
Outside work, Peter was a talented musician, playing guitar, piano, trombone and sackbut. He also sang with the Jacobi Chorale and the Something Good Singers. He was an avid gardener and keeper of hens as well, and in recent years had taken up riding a motorbike.
Peter's passing on 7 November leaves wife Julia, daughters Victoria, Suzannah, Eleanor and Grace and grandchildren Eliza, Nancy and River. RICS sends its condolences to his loved ones. He will be missed by family, friends and colleagues alike.
Peter’s family have set up a charity account for those who wish to support a cause close to his heart. The charity is Uttoxetter Gateway Club which is a social club for adults with learning disabilities and is affiliated with Mencap. https://peter-george-dixon.muchloved.com/

Professor Malcolm Hollis was a hugely influential figure in the field of surveying, and the many tributes paid to him attest not only to his wide array of expertise but also the many lives and careers he touched as a professional, an author, a friend and a mentor.
Malcolm began his built environment career in architecture; moving through construction and eventually into surveying, he founded his first practice in 1974, which became part of Baxter Payne & Lepper in 1980.
He established Malcolm Hollis Chartered Surveyors, now Hollis, in 1991. As well as leading the business to considerable success, Malcolm was a prolific author of books, chapters and articles that many surveyors have found essential in their work – his Surveying Buildings has been published in multiple editions, and is described by some as a ‘surveyors’ bible’.
He was a renowned expert in many areas of surveying, including building defects, lease liabilities, litigation advice, dispute resolution and dilapidations, and sat on multiple working groups, committees and tribunals for RICS and other built environment organisations.
Alongside this he was a professor of building pathology at the University of Reading from 1988, and acted as an examiner at undergraduate, master's and doctoral level. In the days since his death, many former students have expressed their gratitude for Malcolm’s guidance.
RICS head of property standards Paul Bagust says: ‘Malcolm was someone who epitomised the values of a chartered surveyor. He was a world-renowned expert in his field and ran a very successful business, but he also found time to give a huge amount back to the profession.
‘His impact and legacy will be felt for many years to come by a profession whose standards he helped to shape – but also by the many people whose careers he has helped, either directly or indirectly through his books and articles. He will be greatly missed by all of us.’

Former Secretary and Keeper of the Records to the Duchy of Cornwall, executive tustee of the Grosvenor Estate, and RICS President 1980–81
Sir John James, always known as Jimmy, dedicated his career to the property sector, serving as RICS President for 1980–81 and as chief executive of both the Duchy of Cornwall and the Grosvenor Estate. He was known for his larger-than-life presence and sense of fun, alongside working hard and having a wonderful laugh.
Jimmy was born in Bournemouth in 1935, and after school at Sherborne he became a surveyor, following his late father Frank into the profession. Working for Dorset firm Fox & Sons, Jimmy studied for his surveyor qualifications at night school before joining the Grosvenor Estate in London in 1961 as a junior surveyor. The same year, he married Elizabeth (Jane) St Clair-Ford.
Within a few years, he took a two-year posting to Vancouver where he oversaw a number of Grosvenor joint venture projects with John Laing & Sons. He returned to the UK as Grosvenor's chief agent and estate surveyor in 1968, being only the 11th person to hold the position since 1720.
In 1971, he was appointed executive trustee of the Grosvenor Estate, where his mission was to help transform it from a traditional, ground-rented and landed estate into a modern property company with an international dimension. He was also elected to the presidency of RICS for 1980–81, being deeply committed to maintaining the highest professional standards throughout his career.
Jimmy retired from his executive role at the Grosvenor Estate in 1993 but continued as a non-executive trustee until 2000. Having known HRH Prince of Wales for a number of years, he was invited in 1993 to serve as Secretary and Keeper of the Records for the Duchy of Cornwall. He was knighted KCVO for his services following his retirement from the Duchy in 1997.
Jimmy was famously well organised and enormously energetic, managing to combine his demanding responsibilities with a number of external, non-executive board appointments, including the Commission for New Towns and the Architectural Heritage Fund. He also gave generously of his time to a number of charities; he had a particular affection and respect for the work of the RNLI, acting as deputy chair until his retirement at the age of 75.
Jane died in 2018; Jimmy missed her enormously but kept busy with his many friends and interests. He died peacefully on 16 February 2021, leaving his brother David, daughter Annabel, and son Simon. He will be sadly missed by all the many people who knew him.

Founder and MD, Property Tectonics
Trevor Mole was an eminent chartered building surveyor, a skilled and innovative academic, and a successful businessman. But most of all, he was a kind, warm and generous person to all who came into contact with him: family, friends, students and colleagues.
He had an indefatigable spirit and an inquisitiveness that he brought to his career as he progressed from tradesman to a graduate degree at the University of Salford and into the surveying profession. Alongside his work, he returned to Salford to become a visiting professor in the university’s School of the Built Environment. He also founded Property Tectonics, a consultancy that has been at the forefront of digital technology for building pathology and energy conservation in the UK.
He will be remembered with gratitude and fondness by so many of today’s building surveyors who were his students, and by those he mentored early in their careers. Esther, Trevor’s daughter, writes: "He loved what he did, and at the heart of that were his colleagues and customers, the community of people he worked with, or, as he saw it, the people he worked for."
His work was acknowledged by his peers when he served as president of the former Building Surveyors Division in 1997. He was then elected president of the Association of European Experts in Building and Construction in 2000, a role he performed diligently and innovatively for eight years, promoting the Erasmus Programme and the EurBE recognition scheme for professionals in the sector.
Trevor brought intellect, energy and action to promoting and advancing the role of chartered building surveyors, their education and skill base. All those who came into contact with this polymath during his professional and academic life will sorely miss him.

It is with great sadness that our colleague and friend Graham Ellis passed away recently. Graham worked as an Associate Director of Residential Property in the standards team for 12 years.
Graham had been unwell for some time and as was typical of him had approached this challenge with great courage, a positive attitude and much humour. For those of us that knew and worked with Graham he will be remembered as a passionate and proud advocate of our profession.
In particular he will be remembered for his outstanding work on modernising RICS’ Home Survey standards. His success in this area directly helped consumers and his fellow professionals, and ensured that RICS remained the leading organisation, setting standards in the home survey sector.
He was a great ambassador and recognised as such by our members. Graham was, renowned for his warmth and kindness and was a much-loved member of our team, always at the heart of social events. .
Graham will be greatly missed but he leaves behind a tremendous legacy both personally and professionally.
