Simon Saliger gave us his insight as he began his journey as a surveyor. As he enroled in our APC program, we asked for his motivations, as he gets ready for assessments.
Becoming a fully accredited member of the RICS has been a personal goal of mine since studying for my BSc Honors Quantity Surveying Degree and aspiring to be a professional Quantity Surveyor. I am targeting to sit the APC interview in October 2019. It will be an honor and privilege to become chartered and of course be recognized by other like-minded individuals globally.
My collective experience in the construction and real estate industry over almost two decades – from London (UK) to New York and now Phoenix, Arizona, this has put me in good stead for observing the differences between how the two countries operate and the importance of the role of a Quantity Surveyor.
An important consideration in going for MRICS accreditation is the support offered by my current employer. CBRE value the importance of professional accreditation and support individuals in pursuing accreditation.

To date, I'm finding the process and communication very useful and efficient. My next steps include planning the formal and informal training plan for the next 12 months. Working in New York there were many events always available to attend. Phoenix has fewer options given its size, meaning I look further afield for training activities or online learning.
The APC program and subsequent member accreditation is recognized by CBRE and the Cost Consultancy group as a valuable asset to its people. Many of CBRE's Cost Consultancy team hold MRICS status and have done for many years. I find this very encouraging from an employee's perspective but practically it also provides a landscape for collaborating with other like-minded individuals who are pursuing MRICS accreditation (nothing can beat the practice sessions where each candidate tries to test the other one!).
I am feeling good about working towards my RICS accreditation and I understand exactly what is required of me during the APC process. The benefits being picked up along the way include increasing my knowledge, reinforcing existing knowledge built up through years of on-the-job learning, and a growing sense of pride of eventually becoming chartered and a full member of RICS. Furthermore, I feel once chartered that I can provide additional value and support to our CBRE Cost Consultancy team and with continuing professional development (CPD), continue to provide expertise and knowledge which we can use as leverage to improve our overall business performance and help drive successful client outcomes.
